Alternative Long Term Care Options
Nursing
Homes
Nursing homes provide for varying degrees of nursing care
in a residential setting that promotes rehabilitation and enhanced support in activities of
daily living. Nursing Care is provided 24 hours per day. This is the most
intensive and dependent level of nursing service provided outside of
a hospital. Admissions can be temporary for those who require short-term
rehabilitation or a brief recuperative period after an extended hospitalization. Many residents
admitted to nursing facilities make it their permanent residence.
Supported
Residential Care
Supported Residential Care facilities can be a freestanding facility or part of an Assisted Living or Nursing Facility. Services provided are similar to those listed for Assisted Living with more of a health care focus in addition to the social model. They are licensed and inspected. Generally, payment options are the same as Assisted Living, but may include Medicaid as a payer when final regulations are implemented.
Retirement Apartments/Communities
Retirement Apartments/Communities are of varying sizes intended for the Independent Senior who desires relief from home management, but also desires support services such as meals, companionship, and security. Some facilities offer health services on an emergency basis and/or have health services available through Home Health Care. Facilities are usually staffed with a manager and maintenance personnel, but nursing personnel are not required. This level of service and housing is not licensed by any agency. Costs are privately funded by the resident. Payment options vary. Types of apartment/communities available include rental only, buying a unit and paying a monthly fee, Section 8 subsidies, or and entrance fee plus monthly service fee. Many facilities with this level of service are located in Southern New Hampshire.
