Alternative Long Term Care Options
Assisted
Living
Assisted Living is part of a continuum of long term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.
Supported
Residential Care
Supported Residential Care facilities can be a freestanding facility or part of an Assisted Living or Nursing Facility. Services provided are similar to those listed for Assisted Living with more of a health care focus in addition to the social model. They are licensed and inspected. Generally, payment options are the same as Assisted Living, but may include Medicaid as a payer when final regulations are implemented.
Retirement Apartments/Communities
Retirement Apartments/Communities are of varying sizes intended for the Independent Senior who desires relief from home management, but also desires support services such as meals, companionship, and security. Some facilities offer health services on an emergency basis and/or have health services available through Home Health Care. Facilities are usually staffed with a manager and maintenance personnel, but nursing personnel are not required. This level of service and housing is not licensed by any agency. Costs are privately funded by the resident. Payment options vary. Types of apartment/communities available include rental only, buying a unit and paying a monthly fee, Section 8 subsidies, or and entrance fee plus monthly service fee. Many facilities with this level of service are located in Southern New Hampshire.
