A day of programming appropriate for those new to Social Services and seasoned pros– Cat Selman will provide all with new perspectives and information that will enhance your ability to care for residents AND yourself! These topics are appropriate for both Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) & Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs). While the framework for some of these programs is rooted in the CMS survey process, the core information about resident care is applicable to ALFs as well.
Cat’s Topics Include:
Best Practices for Avoiding Psychosocial Harm
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and state health departments regularly cite nursing homes for deficiencies related to the well-being and treatment of residents. These deficiencies often cover issues that lead to psychosocial harm, such as emotional distress, social isolation, or poor mental health outcomes for residents.
This session will address the top 10 deficiencies related to psychosocial harm that were commonly cited in nursing homes in 2025. These deficiencies, which were typically coded under F-Tags, specifically F600-F629, for psychosocial well-being, aim to ensure that caregivers meet the necessary standards to promote residents’ dignity, emotional health, and overall quality of life. Cat will be sharing insight to the findings and providing common-sense operational strategies to address the potential deficient practices.
Earning the Respect You Deserve: Professional Empowerment for Social Services
“I don’t get the same respect as the D.O.N.” “I’m at the bottom of the totem pole.” “The only reason we have a Social Worker or Activity Director is because the government requires it!” If you’ve ever felt undervalued or overlooked in your role, you’re not alone. Research shows that confidence and professional self-image play a critical role in how others perceive your leadership. Many Social Workers and Activity Professionals unintentionally downplay their expertise, which can impact how colleagues and administrators respond to them. This empowering session is designed to change that narrative. Participants will learn practical strategies to project confidence, strengthen professional identity, and command respect within the interdisciplinary team. From education and training to communication, appearance, and interpersonal skills – every detail contributes to how you’re perceived. It’s time to shift from “paraprofessional” to professional leader.
Elevate your presence and enhance your credibility. You’ve got the education, the heart, and the expertise – now it’s time to make sure everyone else knows it. Walk away inspired, equipped, and ready to command the respect you deserve!
Social Services – What Can Be Learned from Critical Element Pathways?
In recent years, CMS has updated its Critical Element Pathways (CEPs) to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of the survey process for nursing homes. However, many facilities are still unfamiliar with these updates or fail to use the CEPs effectively to ensure compliance. This session bridges that gap by providing an in-depth, practical exploration of the latest updates to the CEPs and their critical role in regulatory compliance and quality care.
This session will start with a comprehensive overview of the Critical Element Pathways, explaining their purpose and how they function within the survey process. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how the CEPs serve as a guide for surveyors when evaluating compliance in various aspects of care and facility operations. Cat will walk participants through the recent updates to the CEPs, providing detailed explanations of the changes and their implications. Attendees will learn about critical areas that have been revised. This session will explore how surveyors now approach investigations in these critical areas. Participants will gain insight into the types of documentation and evidence surveyors will look for during their visits. By understanding these changes, attendees will be better equipped to proactively address compliance issues and avoid citations.
Assuring Compliance: Sensitivity Training for Ethical Care in Aging Services
In today’s healthcare landscape, long-term care facilities are increasingly being cited for failures in respecting resident dignity, cultural competence, and inclusive care practices. Additionally, inadequate sensitivity to residents’ needs can expose facilities to legal risks, including lawsuits. This is a critical session designed to equip staff with the tools and strategies needed to meet regulatory expectations, enhance resident care, and mitigate legal risks. This session focuses on the vital role that cultural sensitivity, empathetic communication, and professional respect play in delivering high-quality care. Participants will explore practical ways to avoid violations of residents’ rights, reduce the risk of legal repercussions, and ensure that every resident is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. By improving communication and understanding, staff can enhance are quality, strengthen family relationships, and foster a more supportive and inclusive care environment.
